Chapter 15 - Under the Brightest Lights

The public hearing filled the county courthouse annex from wall to wall. Reporters lined the back. Survivors sat with families. Donors hid their Voss pins.
Mara walked to the witness table on her silver crutch. Her socket still hurt, but she'd learned to pace herself. She took a seat, rested her arm, and looked straight at the cameras.
"My brother's name was Owen Quinn," she began. "He was seventeen. He didn't die because a driver was careless. He died because powerful people treated safety as an inconvenience."
The room went silent.
Teresa testified about her father's clean blood test and played the recording of Luis begging for a replacement bus. Frank presented the carbon work order. Ruth Bell explained the preserved gate footage. June described the altered gala clip. Each piece killed a lie.
Then Celeste entered with her lawyers.
She said she had never seen the maintenance warning. She called Mara unstable. Her attorney displayed a grainy video showing Mara reaching into a file drawer at the gala.
"Isn't it true you stole documents to blackmail the Voss family?" he asked.
"I took a copy of a report they'd hidden about a crash that killed my brother," Mara said. "And I asked them why."
"So you admit taking private property."
"I admit I wanted answers."
He played the edited pool video. Murmurs spread through the room.
Mara turned toward the audience. "Now play the part before he kicked her."
Avery's full recording came on the screen. Celeste lunged with the candelabrum. Mara fell. Caleb caught the weapon. The kick came only after Celeste tried to strike again.
Somebody in the crowd gasped. Celeste's lawyer reached for the remote, too late.
The hearing chair called for order. Caleb took the stand next, admitted his own misconduct, and swore that Celeste had known the brakes were unsafe.

As he stepped down, a clerk rushed to the chair with a sealed notice. The chair read it, looked at Mara, and hesitated.
"Ms. Quinn," she said, "the Voss legal team has filed an emergency petition accusing you of tampering with evidence. They're asking a judge to seize every recording in your possession."
