Chapter 16 - The Order That Failed

Voss lawyers demanded every device. They called it preservation. June called it stealing the truth twice.

Nina walked to the hearing chair and showed her the police evidence receipts. The recorder from Teresa had been sealed, copied by a forensic examiner, and checked against its original files. The gate footage was in court custody. The evidence was safe.

"Your petition isn't an order," Nina told Celeste's lawyer. "A judge still has to sign it."

The attorney gave her a thin smile. "We have a judge waiting."

Two hours later, the emergency judge refused to authorize a blanket seizure. Mara almost sagged with relief. Then Nina received a call from her evidence technician.

"Someone opened our digital storage account last night," he said. "They tried to delete the forensic copies."

"Did they succeed?"

"No. The backup's offline. But the login came from a police workstation."

Nina looked across the corridor at a young officer named Gavin Pike, who had handled the Voss records since the reopened investigation. His chair and locker were empty. By noon, a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

"Your own department," Teresa said bitterly.

"One person in my department," Nina replied. "And I'm going to find him."

Outside, Mara spotted her mother waiting on the courthouse steps. Diane Quinn had refused to watch the hearing. She'd seen enough legal rooms where people in expensive shoes explained why her son was dead.

"I heard you on the radio," Diane said. "You sounded like him."

"Like Owen?"

"You said the part nobody wanted to hear. He always did that."

Mara's throat tightened. "Sometimes I think if I'd grabbed him harder, he'd still be here."

Her mother touched her cheek. "Sometimes I think if I'd kept him home that day, he'd still be here. We could spend the rest of our lives making up things we should've done. But neither one of us drove that bus onto a broken bridge."

For the first time in years, Mara believed her for more than a few seconds.

Then Diane reached into her bag. "The police returned one of Owen's boxes this morning. There was something tucked behind his torn jacket lining."
