Chapter 7 - A Detective with No Patience

Detective Nina Alvarez listened to the recording twice without interrupting. Then she set the headphones down very carefully.

"I need the original device," she said.

Teresa folded her arms. "And I need a reason to believe it won't disappear."

"Fair." Nina pulled a chain-of-custody form from her desk. "You can watch me seal it. You get a receipt. I make a forensic copy today."

Nina had worked the crash case; her name was on the report blaming Luis. She had tired eyes and a stained sleeve.

"I signed that report," she told them. "I trusted the mechanic certification. I shouldn't have."

"Don't apologize to me," Teresa said. "Fix it."

They watched Nina secure the recorder in an evidence bag. June gave her the safety scan, the dispatch sheet, and the URL of the edited pool video.

"We need the full video from the mansion," June said.

Nina shook her head. "Their cameras were offline for maintenance. That's the story Blake gave the patrol officers."

"Convenient," Mara said.

"I didn't say I believed it."

Nina had worse news: Celeste had filed for a protective order, claiming Mara had threatened her with a weapon before Caleb attacked. The Voss attorneys were demanding Mara's phone and the names of anyone who'd spoken to her.

"They want my sources," June said.

"They want control," Nina answered. "Don't make it easy."

Mara leaned across the desk. "If the truth was on that recorder for three years, why didn't anyone hear it?"

"Because the case was closed. Because people trusted a rich family's polished paperwork. Because I let them." Nina's jaw tightened. "I'm not making that mistake again."

As they stood to leave, Nina's phone rang. She listened, frowned, and turned away from them.

"What do you mean the evidence locker was accessed? By whom?"

She ran into the hallway.

Mara's phone vibrated a moment later. Another text from the unknown number.

THE EAST-GATE FOOTAGE SURVIVED. COME BEFORE THEY ERASE IT. NO POLICE.
