Chapter 2 - The Video Everyone Saw

"You signed it?" Mara asked.
Caleb didn't look away. "Yes."
"My brother was seventeen."
"I know."
"Then don't say you know anything." She pushed him back with her good hand.
Two security guards hurried across the terrace. Their boss, Blake Soren, walked behind them, broad-shouldered and calm. He didn't check on Celeste. He pointed.
"Get her off the property."
"She needs medical help," Caleb said.
"Miss Voss says she attacked her."
"There are forty witnesses."
Blake smiled without warmth. "Forty people who saw you kick a woman into a swimming pool."
Across the patio, Celeste was climbing the steps, furious and dripping. "She brought a forged report. She threatened my family." Her voice rose for the crowd. "Then Caleb went crazy. Somebody call the cops!"
Phones came up. Mara imagined the ten-second clip: a kick, a fall, a splash. Nothing about the candelabrum. Nothing about the woman lying defenseless on the stones.
A young server reached for Mara's crutch and quietly placed it beside her. "I saw everything," the girl whispered.
"What's your name?"
"Avery." Her gaze flicked toward Blake. "Don't say I told you."
Mara saw a security guard carry away the broken glass. Another scooped up the gold candelabrum with a napkin. Evidence vanished.
She felt for her phone. Gone. It had been in her jacket pocket when Celeste chased her from the balcony.
"Where's my phone?"
Blake's hand drifted toward his own pocket. "Maybe you dropped it."
"Maybe you took it."
He stepped close enough that she smelled mint on his breath. "You need to understand how this town works, Ms. Quinn."
"I understand six funerals."
Caleb stood. "Touch her, and I'll tell the responding officers why your cameras on the west terrace went dark at exactly seven fifteen."
Blake's smile vanished.
The server slipped behind Mara and pressed something against her palm. Her phone, screen cracked but still glowing. Avery gave a tiny shake of her head and walked away.
