Chapter 15 - Leo Is Gone

Arthur arrived at the hospital still wearing wet clothes.

The police had sealed the pediatric floor.

Leo’s bed was empty.

A nurse was crying near the doorway. “A man came in with transport papers. He had a hospital badge. Everything looked real.”

Arthur grabbed the bed rail. “When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

Detective Kim stormed in behind him. “Security footage.”

The video showed a man in blue scrubs pushing Leo in a wheelchair through a service elevator. His face was partially covered by a surgical mask.

But when he reached for the elevator button, his sleeve pulled up.

There was a black compass tattoo on his wrist.

Kim froze the frame.

“I know him,” she said.

“Who?”

“Derek Shaw. Former cop. Dismissed three years ago.”

Arthur looked at her. “For what?”

“Selling information.”

The leak.

Kim’s face hardened with personal anger. “He’s been feeding Graham police movement.”

Elena arrived with Mateo and Victoria under escort. Victoria looked shattered when she heard Leo was gone.

“No,” she whispered. “No, no, no.”

Arthur rounded on her. “Who is Shaw?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“I said I don’t—”

“Think!”

Victoria flinched, then closed her eyes.

“There was another man,” she said. “Graham called him D. He was supposed to fix problems if Nolan failed.”

“What problems?” Elena asked.

Victoria looked at Arthur.

“Witnesses.”

Arthur felt the room tilt.

Kim ordered an immediate citywide alert.

Then Leo’s abandoned wheelchair was found in the parking garage beside an ambulance bay.

A witness had seen a white delivery van leaving at high speed.

Arthur stared at the security image.

On the side of the van was the faded logo of a company he recognized.

Vale Medical Logistics.

A division the company had shut down six years earlier.

“There were three old depots,” Arthur said. “Two were sold.”

Kim asked, “And the third?”

Arthur looked at her.

“Still belongs to us.”

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Arthur answered.

Leo whispered, “Dad?”

Then Shaw’s voice came on.

“Bring Graham Pike to me, or you’ll never hear your son again.”
