Chapter 18 - The Roof
Wind tore across the depot roof.
Shaw dragged Leo toward the edge, one arm around the boy’s chest.
Arthur climbed through the hatch slowly.
“Derek,” he said. “You got the money.”
Shaw’s eyes were wild. “Then stay back.”
“Take the money and go.”
“I plan to.”
“Not with my son.”
Leo’s face was pale, but he was watching Arthur carefully.
Below them, sirens and shouting filled the yard.
Shaw backed toward a maintenance ladder on the far side. “You rich guys always think there’s another deal. There isn’t.”
Arthur took one step.
Shaw raised the gun.
Leo suddenly bit his hand.
Shaw shouted.
Arthur charged.
The gun fired.
Pain burned across Arthur’s upper arm, but he kept moving. He hit Shaw low and drove him into the gravel roof.
Leo rolled away.
“Run!” Arthur yelled.
Shaw punched Arthur’s wound. Arthur nearly blacked out.
Then Shaw scrambled toward Leo.
Arthur caught his ankle.
Shaw kicked free and stumbled backward.
His heel crossed the roof edge.
For one second, he windmilled his arms.
Arthur lunged and caught his wrist.
Shaw hung over the side.
Below, officers shouted for Arthur to hold on.
Shaw looked up at him in disbelief. “Why are you saving me?”
Arthur’s injured arm shook violently.
“Because my son is watching.”
With help from officers reaching the roof, Arthur pulled him up.
Shaw was handcuffed.
Leo ran into Arthur’s chest.
Arthur held him with his good arm.
“It’s over,” he whispered.
Leo buried his face against him. “Promise?”
Arthur looked across the roof at the police, the broken gate, the flashing lights.
“I promise I’m not leaving you alone again.”
Down in the yard, Detective Kim examined the laptop.
The twenty-million-dollar transfer had completed—but not to Shaw’s account.
Graham had changed the destination during the chaos.
Kim turned toward him.
“Where did you send it?”
Graham smiled from behind his handcuffs.
“To the only person who can still walk away.”
