Chapter 6 - The Snake Tattoo

Leo remembered more than anyone expected.
Not all at once. Memory came in sharp little pieces that made him shake: the smell of gasoline, Victoria arguing in the garage, the man with the snake tattoo wrapping his hand in a towel, a silver pickup truck parked behind the hedge.
Detective Kim showed him photographs of known associates connected to Victoria’s finances.
Leo stared at each face and shook his head.
Then he stopped.
His finger touched a photograph of a heavyset man with a shaved head and a scar near his left eyebrow.
“That’s him.”
The name beneath the picture was Nolan Price.
Arthur knew it.
“Nolan worked security for my father,” he said. “He was fired twelve years ago for stealing equipment.”
Kim asked, “And your wife knew him?”
“I didn’t think so.”
Elena folded her arms. “You didn’t think she knew about the room in the basement either.”
Arthur looked at her, stung, but did not argue.
Police traced Nolan to a storage facility outside the city. By evening, they had a warrant.
Arthur was ordered to stay away.
He did not.
He followed in his own car and parked across the street while officers entered the facility. Elena, after learning Mateo was safe but frightened, arrived separately and caught Arthur watching from behind the wheel.
“You’re going to get arrested,” she said, climbing into the passenger seat.
“I’m not going inside.”
“You were thinking about it.”
“Yes.”
For the first time in two days, Elena almost smiled.
Then gunshots cracked from inside the storage building.
Arthur was out of the car before she could grab him.
“Arthur!”
Police shouted. Someone ran between two rows of units.
Nolan burst through a side door, clutching his wounded hand. The snake tattoo flashed across his skin.
He saw Arthur.
For one frozen second, the two men stared at each other.
Nolan raised a pistol.
Elena slammed into Arthur from the side.
The shot shattered the car window.
Officers fired back. Nolan dropped the gun and fell behind a concrete barrier.
When Kim reached him, he was alive, bleeding from the shoulder, and laughing.
Arthur stepped close enough to hear him whisper.
“You still think Victoria planned this?”
Arthur’s blood ran cold.

Nolan smiled through his pain.
“She’s scared of the same person you should be.”
