Chapter 17 - The Depot

“Hands on the wheel,” a voice boomed through a loudspeaker.

Arthur obeyed.

Graham sat beside him in cuffs, breathing too fast.

“Get out,” Shaw ordered.

They stepped into the depot yard.

Floodlights snapped on one by one, exposing stacks of old shipping containers.

Shaw appeared on a metal catwalk twenty feet above them.

Leo stood beside him.

His hands were zip-tied.

Arthur’s entire body locked.

“Dad!”

“I’m here, buddy.”

Shaw pressed a gun against Leo’s shoulder. “Codes.”

Graham shouted, “You let the boy go first.”

Shaw smiled. “You’re negotiating with money that isn’t yours.”

Arthur raised his hands. “The account requires Victoria too.”

“I know.”

A side door opened.

Two masked men dragged Victoria into the yard.

Arthur stared at her.

Kim had kept Victoria at police headquarters.

Unless—

His stomach dropped.

Victoria ripped off the hood and shouted, “Arthur! They took me from the transport van!”

Shaw had another leak.

Or he had planned further ahead than all of them.

He ordered Graham and Victoria to enter the codes into a laptop on a steel table.

Graham hesitated.

Shaw grabbed Leo by the collar.

“Do it!”

Graham typed.

Victoria typed her sequence.

The screen displayed: TRANSFER PENDING — 120 SECONDS.

Shaw’s smile widened.

Arthur watched Leo.

Leo was staring at something behind Shaw.

A loose chain hung from the catwalk railing.

Arthur met his son’s eyes and gave the smallest possible nod.

Leo had always been good at reading him.

Shaw turned toward the laptop.

Leo kicked the chain.

It swung hard and struck Shaw’s gun arm.

The pistol fired wide.

Arthur ran.

Gunfire erupted from outside the depot as Kim’s tactical team breached the gates.

Graham dove behind the steel table.

Victoria dropped flat.

Arthur climbed the catwalk stairs two at a time.

Shaw grabbed Leo and dragged him toward the roof access ladder.

Arthur reached the platform just as Shaw kicked the ladder loose.

Leo screamed.

Shaw hauled him onto the roof.

Arthur followed.

Below, the transfer timer hit 00:08.

Then Graham looked at the laptop and started laughing.

May you like

The screen flashed:

TRANSFER COMPLETE.
