Chapter 11 - The Wolf Ring

Samuel identified the ring from Noah’s description. It belonged to Victor Sloane, a private investigator hired years earlier by the Whitmore foundation. Sloane had once handled sensitive disputes for Margaret. Daniel located a business address and passed it to the police.

Ellie visited June’s old apartment with her aunt, hoping to find the missing pages of June’s notebook. In a box of recipe cards, she discovered a receipt for a storage locker. June had written two words across it: FOR HANNAH. Ellie called Gabriel rather than going alone. He arrived with Daniel, and together they asked the facility manager to preserve its records while they obtained the proper authorization.

The storage facility manager remembered June because she always thanked him by name. Ellie smiled through tears at that detail. "That sounds like her." Gabriel noticed the difference between the worlds they had inhabited. His family built marble plaques with names engraved in gold. June had made people remember her by treating them kindly. He wondered which kind of legacy Noah would someday value.

Noah drew the wolf ring with a thick black marker, concentrating so hard that his tongue pressed against his lip. "He smelled like the garage," he said. "Like the stuff they put in cars." Foster asked if the man had spoken. Noah nodded. "He said if I was quiet, Daddy would come home faster." Gabriel closed his eyes. He had been away on business the night his son remembered. The thought was unbearable. Ellie moved beside him. "Don't make him comfort you," she whispered. "He needs to see you're strong enough to hear it." Gabriel opened his eyes and thanked Noah for telling the truth. The boy leaned into him. Later Daniel found a photograph from a corporate dinner: Victor Sloane, the security contractor, raising a glass. On his hand gleamed a silver wolf.

The locker was nearly empty. In the back sat a child’s yellow raincoat and a small digital recorder. When Daniel pressed play, Hannah’s voice filled the room: "If Gabriel is hearing this, somebody finally believed me."
