Chapter 9 - A Son’s Promise

Gabriel carried Noah into his own bedroom and promised that nobody would lock him away again. Noah asked whether Ellie would be fired. "No," Gabriel said. "Not for protecting you." The boy finally relaxed enough to sleep. Gabriel stayed beside him until his breathing became even, listening to the rain tap against the windows.
Downstairs, Ellie confessed she had feared Gabriel as much as his mother. She had seen him arrive at parties, shake hands, and disappear into meetings while Noah watched from the staircase. "He needed you," she said. Gabriel did not defend himself. "I thought keeping the business alive was how I kept him safe." Ellie answered, "He needed you in the room." The words hurt because they were true.
Gabriel canceled the next week of meetings. His assistant asked whether the investors would understand. "They can call Daniel," he said. Then he sat on Noah’s bedroom floor and built a crooked tower from wooden blocks. Noah knocked it down and laughed, surprised by the sound. Gabriel realized he had forgotten the exact shape of that laugh. The discovery hurt more than any insult Margaret had thrown at him.

Gabriel gave her the nursery photographs and maintenance order. Ellie described finding Noah feverish and alone. Foster asked the boy whether he wanted to speak with a child advocate instead of another stranger in a suit. Noah nodded. Margaret tried to interrupt. "He's suggestible." Foster turned toward her. "Then don't suggest anything to him." In the hallway Gabriel overheard a staff member saying Conrad had ordered the back gates locked. He walked outside and saw the gate motors cycling without opening. The estate suddenly felt less like a home than a trap. Gabriel called Daniel. "Get everyone out safely," he said. "And don't tell my mother where you're taking the evidence."
Daniel called with news that Conrad had left the estate before officers could question him. Worse, the mansion’s emergency alarm had been disabled from an administrator account. Gabriel checked the account name. It was his.
