Chapter 7 - Behind the Wine Cellar

The basement smelled of stone and expensive oak. Gabriel had walked past its wine racks a thousand times. Noah led them to a narrow door hidden behind a sliding shelf. The lock had fresh scratches. Ellie explained that Noah had heard voices behind it late at night and once seen Conrad carry a stack of folders inside.
Daniel insisted they wait for the police before forcing entry. Gabriel agreed, then sent photographs of the lock and shelf to a detective he knew through the family foundation. Margaret stood at the top of the stairs insisting the room held old tax files. "Then you won’t mind us looking," Gabriel replied. She said nothing. When the detective arrived, he obtained consent from Gabriel, the legal owner of the house, and documented the room before opening it.
The detective walked the basement twice before opening the cabinet. Each drawer was labeled in neat handwriting. Margaret had always prized order; she could make even cruelty look like an administrative decision. Gabriel remembered how she had corrected Hannah’s posture at dinner, how she had called concern "hysteria," how often he had changed the subject rather than intervene. His silence had not created her power, but it had given her room.

The passage behind the wine cellar was colder than the rest of the house. Gabriel had played hide-and-seek here as a child, back when his father still laughed. Now the walls held shelving, surveillance cables, and labeled boxes. Ellie found a carton of children's art supplies beside a stack of shredding bags. "Why keep Noah's drawings down here?" she asked. Gabriel opened one and saw a photograph of Hannah smiling at a summer picnic. Someone had cut Gabriel out of the frame. Daniel photographed the boxes before anyone touched them. "Chain of custody starts now," he warned. On the far wall Gabriel found a keypad wired to the security system. He entered his birthday. Nothing. He tried his father's. The lock clicked. Margaret had always told him his father left the estate in perfect order. Standing inside a secret archive, Gabriel wondered what else perfection had been used to conceal.
Inside were archived security drives, financial records, and a locked cabinet labeled H.W. Gabriel reached for the first folder. Behind him, Margaret said, "If you open that, you’ll destroy everything your father built."
