Chapter 14 - The Guard’s Confession

Gabriel met Conrad in a police interview room with counsel present. Conrad admitted he had followed orders to keep Noah isolated during the gala. He claimed he believed the boy was merely being disciplined. Then he confessed he had deleted footage of Ellie carrying Noah out of the overheated room. "Mrs. Whitmore told me the video would embarrass the family," he said.
Asked about Hannah, Conrad hesitated. He had seen Victor Sloane near the garage the night before the crash, speaking to Margaret. He could not say what they planned. He had kept silent because Margaret controlled his job and mortgage assistance. Gabriel told him fear did not erase responsibility. Conrad nodded. "I know."
Conrad kept his eyes on the table during the interview. He had convinced himself that following instructions meant he was not responsible for the result. Gabriel had once used the same excuse, though in cleaner language. He had delegated his son’s care and called it providing stability. Listening to Conrad, he heard the terrible convenience of that logic. Responsibility could be shared, but it could not be handed away.

Conrad met Gabriel in a bare interview room, with Foster watching from behind the glass. The former security chief looked smaller without his earpiece and men at the door. "I did things I can't defend," he said. "I told myself I was protecting the family." Gabriel leaned forward. "You locked my son in a room." Conrad swallowed. "Margaret said he needed discipline. I knew it was wrong." "You could have opened the door." "Yes." For a moment there was nothing left to say. Then Conrad slid a key across the table. It opened a storage unit outside the city. "I copied the garage footage because Sloane wanted the original destroyed." Gabriel stared at the key. "Why give it to me now?" Conrad's eyes filled. "Because I saw Noah's face at the gala. He looked the way your wife looked when she asked me for help."
As officers prepared a formal statement, Conrad mentioned a second security drive he had hidden. "It shows who entered the garage that night," he said. "But there’s something else on it. Your wife wasn’t alone."
