Chapter 13 - The Truth Has Witnesses

Gabriel refused to leap from suspicion to accusation. He gave the recordings to investigators and hired an independent audit of the foundation. Within days, accountants found transfers that appeared designed to hide millions in diverted donations. The names of two board members surfaced repeatedly.

Margaret’s allies began calling Gabriel unstable. One newspaper ran a story claiming a maid had manipulated the family for money. Ellie received threats online and considered leaving town. Gabriel told her he would fund legal representation and security without asking her to stay or remain silent. "You don’t owe me loyalty," he said. "You told the truth when it cost you." Ellie answered, "I’m staying until Noah knows he’s safe."

When the newspaper story appeared, Ellie’s aunt called in tears. Ellie told her not to read the comments. Then she read them herself and felt the old fear returning. Gabriel asked his attorney to respond with facts rather than threats. "No smear campaign," he insisted. "We’re not becoming them." He knew restraint would not win every headline. It was still the only choice he could live with.

Foster insisted on interviewing witnesses separately. The ballroom staff, finally free from Margaret's supervision, began to speak. One server recalled seeing Sloane enter through the garage on the night of the crash. Another remembered Margaret ordering a box of Hannah's belongings burned. Mrs. Vale admitted she had hidden two photographs instead. "I told myself I was keeping the peace," she said. Foster replied, "Peace for whom?" Gabriel sat in the waiting room with Ellie and heard the question through the open door. It was the question he should have asked eighteen months earlier. Ellie rubbed the white apron between her fingers. "I don't want Noah growing up thinking people only help when it's safe," she said. Gabriel looked at the woman who had risked her livelihood for his son. "Neither do I," he answered. But when his phone buzzed, the screen showed an unknown number and a photograph of Noah taken that morning.

That night, the detective called. Conrad had been found at a motel outside the city. He was alive, frightened, and ready to talk. But he demanded to speak to Gabriel alone.
