Chapter 17 - What Hannah Was Carrying

A search of June’s files revealed that Hannah had gathered evidence not only of diverted charity funds but also of fraudulent adoption-placement fees charged to desperate families. She planned to bring the records to federal investigators. The documents made clear why powerful people might have wanted her silenced, though they did not yet establish who caused the crash.
Ellie struggled with the revelation that June had risked her life to help strangers. Gabriel took Noah to the community clinic Hannah had supported and showed him a mural his mother had helped paint. "She loved this place," Gabriel said. Noah traced a blue star with his finger. "Did she love me more?" Gabriel knelt. "More than anything." Noah leaned into him. It was the first time in months the boy had asked for a hug without looking over his shoulder.
Noah carried a folded drawing to the clinic. It showed three figures holding hands beneath a crooked sun. One figure wore a gray dress. Gabriel asked whether that was Ellie. Noah nodded. "She came when I called." Gabriel studied the picture for a long time. He did not ask why his own figure stood so far from the others. He already knew. That night he moved his chair closer to Noah’s bed.

Gabriel found Ellie in the garden, where Noah had planted a crooked row of tulip bulbs with his mother. "Do you think Hannah knew?" he asked. Ellie looked up. "Knew what?" "That I would fail her." Ellie shook her head. "I think she knew you could do better. That's why she kept trying to reach you." Gabriel watched the dark soil under the path lights. "I can't make any of it right." "No," Ellie said. "But you can stop making it worse." Inside, Noah was building a blanket fort with Mrs. Vale. The housekeeper asked permission before touching his toys, and he granted it solemnly. It was such a small change that Gabriel almost missed its weight. For years adults had decided what Noah needed without listening. Now a frightened child was learning that his answer mattered. Gabriel joined the fort and waited for Noah to invite him in.
As they left, Daniel called. Investigators had recovered a deleted voicemail from Hannah’s phone. Her final words were addressed to Gabriel: "Don’t trust the accident report."
