Chapter 10 - Derek's Favorite Trick

Traffic footage showed Derek leaving Precinct 12 at 10:42 a.m. A black sedan passed. Gunshots. Derek fell.
The sedan belonged to an Ashford company and had been reported stolen.
Maya paused the footage.
Harper leaned forward. "Zoom in on his hand."
Derek was holding his phone.
Harper checked her messages.
At 10:43, one minute after the shooting, Derek had texted:
YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELF.
"Maybe delayed delivery," Lena said.
Harper shook her head. "He schedules texts. He used to send them while he was at work so I'd think he was watching me."
Noah looked up from the table.
"He shot himself before."
The room went silent.
Harper turned. "What?"
"Last year. In the garage. He said the gun went off, but I saw him. He was practicing where to shoot so he wouldn't die."
Maya's face hardened.
Derek had not just framed Gabriel.

Harper stared at the news screen.
For years, Derek had weaponized her reactions and called himself calm.
Now she finally understood the scale of his favorite trick.
Harper told Maya how Derek manufactured evidence inside their marriage. He would start an argument, block the doorway, grab her wrist, then begin recording only after she screamed. Later he played the clips for friends and called her emotional. Once, he punched a cabinet beside her head and photographed the broken wood as proof of her "temper." The pattern mattered because his shooting followed the same design: create chaos, preserve only the part where he looked injured, and let the badge explain the rest. Noah's memory of Derek practicing a nonfatal shot gave investigators something better than instinct. It gave them a method.
Create the violence.
Noah apologized for not telling Harper about the garage sooner. She hugged him and said the sentence she wished someone had told her years earlier: "His secret was never your responsibility.
