Chapter 5 - His Father's Name

Gabriel did not answer fast enough.
"Did you know?" Harper demanded.
"No."
"Did you know my father's name before tonight?"
"No."
"And I'm supposed to trust you?"
"I didn't ask you to."
He placed a key ring on the desk. "My attorney owns an apartment in Cambridge. You can leave with Noah tonight. The drive stays with you."
Harper stared at him. "It could destroy your family."
"Then my family should have behaved better."
For the first time, she saw shame behind his control.
"People call you a mob boss," she said.
"I've enforced deals through fear. I've protected businesses that should have faced daylight. I benefited from what my father built. That does not make me innocent."
"Does it make you better than Derek?"
"No."
The answer came without hesitation.
Before Harper could respond, a security alarm chirped.
"Garage camera is down," a guard reported.
Another voice followed. "East stairwell too."
The lights died.
Noah screamed from the guest room.
Harper ran into the dark hallway.
A hand grabbed her arm. She drove her forehead forward and heard a curse.
"Down!" Gabriel shouted.
A gunshot shattered glass.
Emergency lights flashed red. Gabriel hit the intruder near the stairs while security rushed in. The man escaped through a broken window.
Mrs. Morrison appeared with Noah safe behind her.
Harper clutched him.
Then she saw the wall.
Someone had painted a message in red:
Gabriel admitted his father had built power by making fear useful. He had inherited businesses and enemies at twenty-six and spent years convincing himself that keeping certain rules made him different. No children. No trafficking. No random bloodshed. Harper listened without being impressed. "A cage with nicer rules is still a cage," she told him. Gabriel accepted the sentence without defending himself. That unsettled her. Derek argued until reality surrendered. Gabriel seemed capable of hearing something ugly and letting it remain ugly. When the house alarms failed minutes later, Harper wondered whether honesty had come too late for both of them.
GIVE BACK THE DRIVE.
Gabriel ordered his men to protect Noah, then stopped and asked Harper whether she wanted them there. She said yes. The difference between consent and command felt enormous.
