Chapter 12 - The Shot

Derek shoved the gun against Mrs. Alvarez's neck.
"There he is," he told Gabriel. "The hero."
Gabriel kept his hands visible. "Take me instead."
"No!" Harper snapped.
Derek ordered him forward.
Maya shouted for Gabriel to stop, but he kept walking, drawing Derek's attention away from Mrs. Alvarez.
Harper saw the opening.
She grabbed the tire iron from Derek's open trunk and swung at his wounded shoulder.
Derek screamed.
The gun fired.
Gabriel dropped.
Agents rushed in. Harper struck Derek's wrist and the gun skidded away. Maya tackled him with another agent.
Harper ran to Gabriel.
Blood spread across his coat.
"No, no, no."
He opened his eyes. "You hit him with a tire iron."
"Shut up."
"Effective."
"Gabriel!"
He lost consciousness as medics reached them.
At the hospital, Maya found Harper before dawn.
"Derek is in federal custody. The recording got his confession about your father."
Harper exhaled. "Then it's over."
"No. Derek isn't the top."
Maya showed her an old photograph: Thomas Ashford, Vincent Hale, and Police Commissioner Raymond Sutter.
Her phone rang.
She listened and swore.
At the hospital, Harper sat with Gabriel's blood dried beneath her fingernails. The sight made her tremble because blood used to mean Derek had decided what happened next. This time, she had acted. She had helped Mrs. Alvarez escape and knocked the weapon away. Maya reminded her that none of that made her responsible for Gabriel's decision to approach. Harper repeated the sentence silently until she almost believed it. When the surgeon finally said Gabriel would recover, relief hit so hard she became angry again. She planned to tell him exactly how furious she was the moment he woke up.
"Derek's transport vehicle was hit."
Mrs. Alvarez squeezed Harper's hand before leaving the hospital. "Next time," she said, "I bring the cast iron." Harper laughed for the first time since the gunshot.

Harper stood. "By who?"
"Someone just stole him from federal custody.
