Chapter 18 - The Father Who Lived

Harper listened to her father's cassette with Noah beside her.
"Harper, if this reaches you, I'm alive. I wish that were good news."
Michael explained he had survived Castle Island and entered secret protection because Sutter's people had compromised law enforcement. Each time he tried to return, someone near Harper was watched.
"I told myself staying away protected you," his voice said. "Maybe it only protected me from seeing what my absence cost."
Harper cried.
Then came the warning.
"Hale knows I'm alive. If Hale falls, he'll come for me. I can identify the men who built the operation."
The recent photograph had been taken in Rockland, Maine.
Federal agents reached Michael's cabin first.
Too late.
Blood marked the kitchen floor. No body.
On the wall:
BRING ASHFORD TO THE OLD DRY DOCK.
Gabriel read the message.
"Hale wants the offshore access he thinks I still control. Michael is bait."
Harper looked at Maya. "Then I'm part of the plan."
Maya frowned.
"Hale knows who I am now," Harper said. "Stop planning around me like I'm furniture."
Gabriel said nothing.
Noah reacted to Michael's recording differently from Harper. He wanted facts: Did Dad like baseball? Did he know Noah's middle name? Had he ever seen school pictures? Harper wanted years returned, which no investigation could provide. Michael's explanation might prove he stayed away out of fear, but it did not erase birthdays, funerals, rent notices, or the years Harper became a parent while still a child herself. Maya told her she did not have to decide whether to forgive him before finding him. Harper held onto that. Rescue did not require instant reconciliation.
Harper glanced at him.
Michael's voice on tape sounded nothing like Harper remembered and exactly like him at the same time. Memory had preserved a younger man who no longer existed.
May you like
He nodded once.
Her choice.
