Chapter 1 - The Crash

The wedding cake hit the marble floor before Daniel Mercer heard his daughter scream.
One second, the five-tier white cake stood beneath the chandeliers like a monument to everything he thought he had finally rebuilt. The next, the silver pedestal tipped hard to the left. Frosting, sugar flowers, and broken porcelain exploded across the ballroom.
Six-year-old Emma jumped backward so fast she nearly fell.
“Oh my God!” Rachel, the children’s nanny, rushed from behind the service table.
Daniel did not look at the cake.
He dropped to one knee in front of Emma.
“Hey. Look at me.” His voice was low and steady. “Are you hurt?”
Emma’s face had gone white. Her tiny hands were locked against the skirt of her cream dress.
She shook her head.
Noah, Daniel’s nine-year-old son, moved closer and stood shoulder to shoulder with his sister.
Across the room, two hundred guests had stopped talking.
The quartet had stopped playing.
Even Vanessa, Daniel’s new wife of exactly forty-three minutes, stood frozen near the dance floor with one hand over her mouth.
Rachel stared at the wreckage, then at Emma.
“Sir… wait.”
Daniel looked up.
Rachel’s eyes were not on the cake.
They were fixed on a thin white cord disappearing beneath the fallen pedestal.
Daniel followed her stare.
Then he looked back at Emma.
“What happened?”
Emma swallowed.
“I didn’t touch it.”
“I know.”
“No.” Her voice cracked. “I mean… I didn’t do what he told me to do.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Emma glanced across the ballroom.
Her eyes landed on Grant Hale, Vanessa’s older brother.
Grant was standing beside a column in a charcoal suit, perfectly still.
Daniel rose slowly.
Grant forced a smile. “Daniel, come on. She’s scared. It was an accident.”
Daniel stepped over broken sugar flowers.
“Then tell me why my daughter is looking at you.”
Grant’s smile disappeared.
The ballroom went silent enough to hear the ice melting in champagne buckets.
Emma tugged at Daniel’s sleeve.
“Daddy?”
He turned.
She leaned close enough that only he could hear.
“He said if the cake fell, everyone would finally understand why I shouldn’t live with you anymore.”
May you like
Daniel looked back at Grant.
And for the first time that night, Grant looked afraid.
