Chapter 15 - Someone Above Crowe

The sedan disappeared into traffic before police could block the street.

Daniel replayed what Lang had mouthed.

Not Crowe.

Grant heard it too.

“What does that mean?”

Nathan joined them in the garage.

“It means we may be treating Crowe like the architect when he’s just another piece.”

Owen was taken upstairs by paramedics.

Before they wheeled him away, he caught Daniel’s hand.

“There’s one person Crowe is afraid of.”

“Who?”

Owen whispered a name.

“Evelyn Shaw.”

Daniel knew it instantly.

Evelyn Shaw sat on Mercer Biotech’s board.

She had worked with Daniel’s father.

She had attended his wedding that night.

And she had left ten minutes before the cake fell.

Nathan pulled corporate records.

Evelyn owned only four percent of the company, but she controlled a private investment fund that had quietly purchased debt tied to Charles Hale’s estate.

Grant stared at the screen.

“If the estate gains control of your trust, she can call the debt.”

“And force a sale,” Nathan said.

Daniel understood the endgame.

Evelyn did not need Mercer Biotech to fail.

She needed it vulnerable.

Crowe created the legal chaos.

The Hale estate stepped in.

Evelyn called the debt.

And she bought control for a fraction of its value.

Vanessa called Daniel.

Her voice was shaking.

“You need to come upstairs.”

“What happened?”

“Emma remembered something.”

Daniel returned to the bridal suite.

Emma sat on the sofa with Sarah’s locket in both hands. Police had recovered it from Dr. Lang’s jacket.

She looked up.

“The man with the hat said a lady told him Mommy’s necklace would make me listen.”

“What lady?”

Emma frowned, thinking.

“She smelled like Grandma’s roses.”

Daniel’s heart slowed.

Evelyn Shaw always wore rose perfume.

Emma added, “And she had a shiny bird on her dress.”

Vanessa walked to a table where guest favors and photos had been collected.

She picked up a picture from the ceremony.

Evelyn Shaw wore a silver brooch shaped like a swan.

Emma pointed immediately.

“That’s her.”

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Evelyn Shaw walked in.
