Chapter 18 - The Public Story

By midnight, the lie had become the story.
Daniel Mercer, unstable CEO.
Drug-fueled wedding meltdown.
Child endangered.
Family dispute.
Anonymous medical source concerned about cognitive decline.
The same false diagnosis appeared in three online outlets within twenty minutes.
Nathan stared at his phone. “They had this ready.”
Daniel nodded. “Crowe built a second battlefield.”
Not the ballroom.
The public.
Mercer Biotech’s board scheduled an emergency meeting for 8:00 a.m.
Evelyn was in police custody, but her allies were not.
The company’s lenders could freeze credit if enough board members panicked.
Grant paced. “So even if Crowe loses tonight, he can still break the company by morning.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel. “What do we do?”
Daniel looked at his children.
Emma was asleep against Rachel’s shoulder.
Noah sat beside her, still wearing his navy suit, eyes open because he was too scared to sleep.
Daniel made a decision.
“We tell the truth before someone else tells another lie.”
At 1:10 a.m., he stood in the ballroom in front of the wedding videographer’s remaining camera.
No dramatic music.
No prepared statement from public relations.
Just Daniel, Grant, Vanessa, Rachel, the hotel manager, and Nathan.
Daniel spoke plainly.
“My daughter was targeted tonight. I was drugged. Evidence was planted to create a false public record of instability. Law enforcement is investigating.”
He did not blame anyone who had not been charged.
He did not hide the fact that Vanessa signed documents without telling him.
Vanessa stepped into frame herself.
“I made a terrible decision because I trusted the wrong people.”
Grant admitted introducing Crowe.
Rachel described finding the trigger.
The hotel manager confirmed the cord and lockdown.
Then the videographer released the unedited footage showing Daniel ignoring the destroyed cake and kneeling beside Emma.
Within an hour, the public story began to fracture.
But at 3:22 a.m., Nathan received an email.
He read it twice.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“The emergency board meeting was moved up.”
“To when?”
Nathan looked at the clock.
May you like
“Six minutes from now.”
“And there’s a motion to remove you as CEO.”
