Chapter 10 - The Room at the End

Daniel ran toward the corner.

Grant stayed half a step behind.

They reached the final hallway just as a suite door slammed shut.

Daniel hit it with his shoulder.

Locked.

“Emma!”

A muffled cry came from inside.

Grant backed up. “Move.”

He kicked beside the lock once.

Twice.

The frame cracked.

Daniel drove his shoulder into it and the door flew open.

Emma stood beside a sofa, crying but unharmed.

The missing security guard was on the floor with a bleeding lip, conscious and furious.

A man in a catering jacket stood near the balcony door.

He was not Crowe.

He was Dr. Peter Lang.

The neurologist whose signature appeared on Daniel’s fake diagnosis.

Daniel stopped.

Lang raised both hands.

“Don’t come closer.”

Grant stared at him. “You’re the doctor.”

Lang looked terrified.

“I didn’t write that letter.”

Daniel moved toward Emma.

Lang stepped aside.

“Take her. I’m not here to hurt her.”

Daniel pulled Emma against him.

She clung to his neck.

“Why is she here?” Daniel asked.

Lang swallowed. “Because Crowe told me if I didn’t bring her upstairs, he’d release evidence that I falsified trial data six years ago.”

“Did you?”

Lang looked away.

“That’s not the point.”

“It is to me.”

Grant shut the door behind them.

“Where’s Crowe?”

Lang nodded toward a laptop on the desk.

“Watching.”

The screen turned on by itself.

Martin Crowe appeared in a live video feed.

He sat in a dark room, smiling.

“There you are.”

Daniel stepped in front of Emma.

Crowe tilted his head.

“You still don’t remember me telling you what Sarah wanted.”

Daniel’s voice was flat. “You never told me anything worth remembering.”

Crowe’s smile vanished.

“Then maybe you remember the night she died.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

May you like

Crowe leaned closer to the camera.

“Because I have the recording you said didn’t exist.”
