Chapter 16 - The Woman With the Swan

Evelyn Shaw entered as if she owned the hotel.

Sixty-two years old. Silver hair. Black evening gown. Swan brooch glittering beneath the chandelier light.

Police moved toward her.

She raised one hand.

“I came voluntarily.”

Daniel stepped between her and Emma.

Evelyn looked at the little girl, then at the locket.

“You found it.”

Daniel’s voice went cold.

“You gave them the idea to use it.”

“No.”

Emma gripped Rachel’s hand.

“She’s the lady.”

Evelyn’s face did not change.

“Children remember fear in strange ways.”

Daniel took one step forward.

“Careful.”

A detective entered with Nathan.

“Ms. Shaw, we need you to come with us.”

Evelyn smiled faintly. “Based on the word of a frightened six-year-old?”

Nathan held up a folder.

“Based on your fund purchasing Hale estate debt through three shell companies.”

Her smile thinned.

“Perfectly legal.”

“Not if the purchase was tied to a plan to manipulate trust control.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“You think I planned this wedding circus?”

“I think you financed it.”

She laughed softly.

“You always did inherit your father’s confidence without his caution.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Evelyn glanced toward the detectives.

“Ask him.”

The room went still.

Daniel almost smiled.

“My father has been dead for eight years.”

Evelyn’s expression did not move.

“No, Daniel.”

Vanessa whispered, “What?”

Evelyn reached into her purse very slowly and removed a sealed envelope.

One detective took it before she could hand it over.

“My attorney instructed me to bring this if the Mercer Trust became part of a criminal investigation.”

Nathan opened the envelope.

Inside was a recent photograph.

Daniel stared at it.

An older man stood outside a clinic in Zurich.

Gray hair. Leaner face. Walking cane.

But unmistakable.

Daniel’s father.

Alive.

On the back, someone had written a date from three weeks earlier.

And beneath it, one sentence.

DANIEL MUST NEVER KNOW I SURVIVED.
