Chapter 19 - Six Minutes

Daniel joined the board meeting from a hotel conference room with five minutes and forty-one seconds left before the vote.

Twelve faces appeared on screen.

Some angry.

Some scared.

Some already decided.

The acting chair spoke first.

“Daniel, in light of tonight’s events and the medical filing—”

“The medical filing is forged.”

“We don’t know that yet.”

Nathan leaned into frame. “Law enforcement has the physician connected to the document under active investigation.”

A board member interrupted. “The company cannot run on chaos.”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“You’re right.”

The room quieted.

“So don’t vote based on chaos. Vote based on evidence.”

He shared the screen.

Bank records.

Shell companies.

Hale estate debt.

Evelyn Shaw’s fund.

The forged incapacity documents.

The sedative screening.

The burner phone messages.

The full wedding footage.

Then Nathan displayed the emergency succession filing that would have handed temporary trust control to Charles Hale’s estate.

One board member whispered, “My God.”

Daniel continued.

“This is not a family scandal. This is an attempted corporate seizure that used my children as leverage.”

The acting chair’s face tightened.

Before he could respond, a new participant entered the meeting.

The name on the screen read THOMAS MERCER.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The camera turned on.

The man from the photograph appeared.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

“Hello, son.”

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“You’re dead.”

Thomas nodded. “Legally, yes.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“You let me bury you.”

“I had reasons.”

“You let my children believe their grandfather was dead.”

Thomas looked away.

Then he said, “Evelyn is telling the truth about one thing. I created the debt structure with Charles Hale.”

Grant swore.

Thomas continued. “But Crowe changed the documents after Charles died. He has been blackmailing everyone involved to cover the theft.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Why come back now?”

Thomas’s eyes filled with something Daniel did not trust.

“Because Crowe has one last document.”

“What document?”

May you like

Thomas swallowed.

“Sarah’s real final instructions.”
