Chapter 1 - The Stain

The yellow liquid hit Claire Bennett before the room had time to gasp.
One second, she was standing beneath the crystal chandelier in a white lace wedding gown that had taken seven months to make. The next, something warm and sour-smelling splashed across her chest, shoulders, hair, and the embroidered front of the dress.
Vanessa Cole still held the empty glass pitcher.
For half a second, no one moved.
Then one bridesmaid whispered, “Oh my God.”
Another covered her mouth.
Claire looked down. The pale yellow stain spread through the lace in ugly rivers.
Vanessa lifted one shoulder in a careless shrug. “Oops.”
Claire raised her eyes.
“Oops?” she repeated.
Vanessa’s mouth curved. “Maybe don’t leave drinks near expensive fabric.”
“You walked across the room and poured it on me.”
“I tripped.”
“No, you didn’t.”
The bridal suite became painfully quiet. Beyond the closed doors, the string quartet was playing the song Claire had chosen for her walk down the aisle. Three hundred guests were waiting. Her father was waiting outside. Her fiancé, Ethan, had no idea that five minutes before the ceremony, his older sister had just drenched Claire in what smelled like champagne mixed with fruit juice.
Claire’s eyes burned.
She wanted to cry. She wanted to scream. She wanted to grab Vanessa by the shoulders and demand to know what kind of person did this on someone’s wedding day.
Instead, she looked up.
Above the mirror, near the corner of the ceiling, a small black security camera stared down at the room.
A red light glowed.
Claire stopped breathing for one beat.
Vanessa saw the change in her face.
“What?” Vanessa asked.
Claire’s gaze stayed on the camera.
Then she smiled.
Not happily.
Quietly.
“Good,” she said. “The camera got everything.”
Vanessa’s color drained.
One of the bridesmaids turned toward the ceiling.
Claire reached for her phone.
Vanessa stepped forward. “Claire, wait.”
Claire lifted the phone to her ear.
“Security,” she said when the line connected. “Lock the footage from the bridal suite. Right now.”
There was a pause.
Then the security manager answered.
“Mrs. Bennett,” he said carefully, “there’s a problem.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“What problem?”
“The camera in that room stopped recording eight minutes ago.”
May you like
Vanessa smiled again.
And Claire understood this had never been about a ruined dress.
