Chapter 13 - The Groom’s Secret

“I was trying to stop it,” Ethan said.

Claire laughed through tears. “By not telling me?”

“I needed proof.”

“You had enough proof to hire a lawyer.”

“I thought if I confronted them too early, they would destroy everything.”

“So you let me walk into my wedding blind.”

“I was going to tell you tonight.”

“After the ceremony.”

He had no answer.

Claire shook her head.

“That’s the problem, Ethan. Everyone in your family keeps deciding when I deserve the truth.”

He stepped closer. “I never forged anything. I never agreed to sabotage you.”

“No. You just knew I was being used and decided you could manage it.”

His face crumpled.

“I thought I could protect you.”

“Protection without truth is control.”

The words silenced him.

Police sirens sounded faintly outside.

Daniel had already called.

Margaret turned toward him in fury.

“You had no authority.”

“I have video showing unauthorized access to a security system and an admission that personal property was taken,” Daniel replied. “That’s enough for me.”

Two officers entered the garage minutes later.

Claire gave a statement.

So did Daniel.

Noah handed over the cash envelope, the stolen phone, and his security keycard.

Vanessa refused to speak without a lawyer.

Margaret did the same.

Richard looked twenty years older.

When an officer asked Claire whether she still intended to hold the wedding, everyone went silent.

Claire looked at Ethan.

He did not beg.

That almost made it worse.

“I don’t know,” she said.

Mia whispered, “Claire.”

“I said I don’t know.”

Because despite everything, she loved him.

That was the cruelest part.

The officer nodded and stepped away.

Then Daniel approached with another flash drive.

“I found audio from a hallway microphone,” he said.

Claire looked at him.

“From when?”

“This morning.”

He glanced at Ethan.

“It records a conversation between Ethan and Margaret.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Claire saw it.

“Play it,” she said.

Ethan whispered, “Claire, wait.”

May you like

She turned to him.

“No more waiting.”
