Chapter 14 - The Recording

Daniel played the audio through his tablet.
Margaret’s voice came first.
“You will marry her today, and we will solve the rest afterward.”
Then Ethan.
“If you forged anything with Claire’s name, I’m going to the police.”
Claire’s heart stuttered.
Margaret said, “Don’t threaten me.”
“I’m not threatening you. I’m telling you what happens next.”
“You have no idea what is at stake.”
“I know exactly what is at stake. Claire is not a signature. She is not a vote.”
A long pause followed.
Then Margaret said, “If you tell her before the ceremony, Vanessa will make sure there is no ceremony.”
The recording ended.
Claire stared at Ethan.
“You knew Vanessa might do something.”
“I thought she meant she’d cause a scene. I didn’t know about the camera or the dress.”
“But you still said nothing.”
“I was scared.”
“So was I. I just didn’t know I needed to be.”
Ethan looked down.
“I failed you.”
That was the first completely honest thing he had said all day.
Claire felt tears rise again.
Across the garage, officers separated Margaret, Vanessa, Noah, and Richard for interviews.
Guests had begun gathering near the entrance, confused by the delay.
The wedding could not remain hidden much longer.
Mia took Claire’s hand. “What do you want?”
Claire looked at her stained gown.
For hours, other people had decided what she should know, what she should sign, when she should speak, and what she should forgive.
She was done.
“I want everyone seated,” she said.
Mia blinked. “For the wedding?”
Claire looked toward the ballroom.
“No.”
Twenty minutes later, the coordinator announced that the ceremony would begin.
Guests stood.
The orchestra played.
Claire walked down the aisle alone.
No veil.
No bouquet.
Yellow stains still visible across her dress.
Ethan waited at the altar, pale and shaken.
Claire took the microphone from the officiant.
Three hundred people stared at her.
She looked at Ethan.
Then she turned toward his family.
“I need everyone here to hear the truth before anyone hears vows.”
Margaret stood up.
“Claire, don’t.”
May you like
Claire smiled faintly.
“That’s the last order you’ll ever give me.”
