Chapter 12 - The Real Plan

For the first time that day, Ethan looked at his parents as if he did not know them.
“You’re stripping the company?” he asked.
Richard spoke carefully. “We are protecting viable assets.”
“By moving them where?”
Noah answered. “Into a new company controlled by Margaret, Vanessa, and Dad.”
Richard snapped, “That is not accurate.”
“It’s accurate enough.”
Claire looked at Margaret. “And you needed my vote.”
Margaret’s voice remained cool. “We needed stability.”
“You needed permission.”
“The company employs twelve hundred people.”
“Then why hide it from the person whose vote you needed?”
Margaret’s composure cracked. “Because you are not a businessperson.”
Claire stared at her.
“I run a medical supply company with eighty employees.”
“A small company.”
“Big enough to know when someone is trying to use me.”
Ethan stepped between them. “Mom, did you know about the forged signature?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Yes.”
The word destroyed something in the room.
Ethan went quiet.
Richard said, “We never intended to file it unless the emergency became unavoidable.”
Claire turned on him. “You keep saying that like it makes it better.”
Mia touched Claire’s arm.
“Police?” she asked.
Claire looked at Margaret.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Ethan.
“Yes.”
Margaret’s face hardened. “Think about what you’re doing.”
“I am.”
“You will destroy this family.”
“No. I walked into a room where your family had already decided my consent was optional.”
Claire dialed 911.
Before she could press call, Ethan grabbed her wrist.
She stared at his hand.
He released her immediately.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I just—please give me one minute.”
Claire’s voice was flat. “For what?”
“To show you something.”
He pulled his phone from his pocket and opened an email.
The sender was his attorney.
The timestamp was six days earlier.
Subject: PRIVATE - COLE TRUST CONCERNS.
Claire read the first line.
Ethan, based on the documents you sent, I believe your parents may be preparing an unauthorized transfer requiring Claire Bennett’s future voting rights.
Claire looked up.
“You knew six days ago.”

Ethan’s face fell.
And the final piece of her trust in him broke.
