Chapter 15 - No Vows Today

Claire did not give the guests every detail.
She did not name crimes that had not yet been charged. She did not accuse people beyond what she could prove.
She told the truth she owned.
“My wedding dress was intentionally ruined today,” she said. “A security camera was disabled. Personal property was taken. I also learned that documents connected to this marriage contain a signature I did not write.”
Gasps moved through the room.
Margaret sat rigidly in the front row.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Claire continued.
“I also learned that marrying Ethan would give me voting rights in a family trust tied to a major financial decision happening in two days.”
A board member in the third row stood abruptly and left.
Another pulled out his phone.
Richard whispered something to Margaret.
Claire looked at Ethan.
“He knew part of this before today. He tried to stop some of it. He also chose not to tell me.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Claire’s voice softened.
“I love him. That is why this hurts.”
The room was so quiet she could hear the air system.
“But love is not permission to hide the truth.”
She removed her engagement ring.
Ethan’s face broke.
Claire placed the ring on the altar.
“There will be no vows today.”
A woman near the back began crying.
Mia did too.
Ethan stepped toward Claire but stopped himself.
“I understand,” he said.
Margaret suddenly stood.
“This is absurd. You are humiliating this family over a misunderstanding.”
Claire turned.
“No. Your family humiliated itself.”
Applause began somewhere near the back.
Then more people joined.
Margaret’s face tightened with rage.
Police entered the ballroom.
One officer walked directly to her.
“Margaret Cole?”
She looked around as if she expected someone to save her.
No one moved.
“We need you to come with us to answer additional questions regarding a forged financial instrument and unauthorized system access.”
Margaret stared at Claire.
“This is your fault.”
Claire’s reply was quiet.
“No. It’s your consequence.”
As Margaret was escorted away, Claire thought the worst was over.
Then Thomas Bell, the company lawyer, approached the altar.
He leaned close.
“Claire, there’s something else you need to know.”
May you like
“What?”
“The forged document was filed this morning.”
