Chapter 9 - The Clip

No one expected Margaret Cole to run.
She was sixty-two, elegant, controlled, and famous for never moving faster than a measured walk.
But when she saw the flash drive in Daniel’s hand, she ran.
Richard caught her arm before she reached him.
“Margaret!”
“Give me that!” she shouted.
Daniel stepped back.
Claire stared at her future mother-in-law.
“That reaction just answered half my questions.”
Margaret twisted free. “You have no idea what is on that file.”
“Then let’s watch it.”
Daniel opened the security office and locked the door behind them.
A wall of monitors showed entrances, hallways, loading docks, kitchens, and ballroom corridors.
He inserted the drive.
The recovered clip began.
3:39 p.m.
Margaret entered first.
Vanessa followed.
Then a man in a black tuxedo walked in behind them.
Claire’s stomach dropped.
From the back, he looked exactly like Ethan.
Same height. Same dark hair. Same tuxedo.
But when he turned, Ethan let out a sharp breath.
It was his cousin, Noah Cole.
Noah had arrived from Boston that morning.
Claire had barely spoken to him.
Vanessa whispered, “I told you.”
On the video, Noah swiped Richard’s security badge, entered a code, and shut down the bridal suite feed.
Margaret spoke to him.
The clip had no audio.
Then Vanessa handed Noah an envelope.
Claire looked at her.
“What was in the envelope?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Ethan’s voice went hard. “Answer her.”
“Cash.”
“How much?”
“Ten thousand.”
“For what?”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
Margaret remained silent.
Claire turned back to the screen.
The video continued.
Noah pocketed the envelope.
Then he held up a second object.
A small clear plastic bag.
Inside was a folded document.
Daniel paused the frame.
Claire leaned closer.
Through the plastic, she could read a printed heading.
BENEFICIARY CONSENT - ORIGINAL.
The forged document.
Claire’s skin prickled.
“Where is Noah now?” she asked.
No one knew.
Then Daniel looked at another monitor.
His face changed.
“There.”

Noah was walking toward the parking garage.
Carrying Claire’s overnight bag.
