Chapter 7 - Before the Aisle

Claire walked into the library still wearing the stained wedding gown.

Ethan’s mother, Margaret Cole, was waiting beside a marble fireplace with a lawyer, two board members, and a folder on the table.

The ceremony music continued faintly through the walls.

Margaret looked at Claire’s dress and showed no surprise.

That told Claire more than any confession could.

“You knew Vanessa was going to do it,” Claire said.

Margaret’s eyes hardened. “I knew she was upset.”

“You gave her a security keycard.”

“That is a serious accusation.”

“Then deny it.”

Margaret said nothing.

Claire turned to the lawyer. “Who are you?”

“Thomas Bell. Counsel for Cole Holdings.”

“And what’s in the folder?”

Bell hesitated.

Margaret answered. “Documents that can wait.”

Claire walked to the table and opened the folder.

Inside were corporate resolutions, beneficiary notices, and a document labeled EMERGENCY VOTING CONSENT.

Her forged signature appeared on page six.

Ethan stood behind her.

His voice was barely audible. “Dad.”

Richard entered and closed the door.

“I was trying to buy time,” he said.

Margaret snapped, “Not here.”

“No,” Claire said. “Here. Now.”

Richard looked at his son. “The company has a bridge loan tied to a board vote. We expected to refinance. It fell apart last week.”

“And Claire’s vote saves it?” Ethan asked.

“If she becomes your spouse, she gets a trust seat. With her vote, we can approve the asset transfer the bank requires.”

Claire turned slowly. “You scheduled my wedding around a corporate deadline.”

“No,” Ethan said immediately. “We picked this date ten months ago.”

Richard nodded. “That part is true.”

Margaret stepped closer to Claire.

“This family is facing a temporary crisis. You love Ethan. Ethan loves you. Nothing about that changes.”

Claire stared at her.

“You forged my signature.”

Margaret’s mouth tightened. “I authorized preparation of a contingency document.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I authorized a placeholder.”

“That’s called forgery.”

Bell quietly closed his briefcase.

Margaret’s eyes flashed toward him.

“Thomas.”

He ignored her.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Daniel, the security manager.

She answered.

“I recovered a clip,” he said.

Claire put him on speaker.

“What’s on it?”

Daniel paused.

“Mrs. Cole entering the security room with Vanessa.”

May you like

Margaret’s face changed.

“And,” Daniel continued, “they weren’t alone.”
