Chapter 1 - The Word That Broke the Room

The hockey stick struck Grace Bennett across the shoulder before she could turn.

Pain tore down her arm. She dropped to one knee on the kitchen tile but kept both arms locked around four-year-old Lily.

"Mommy!"

Victoria Vance stood over them in a white silk dress, gripping the stick with both hands. Her face was beautiful.

Her eyes were not.

"You should have stayed away," Victoria said.

Grace fought for breath. "I tried."

"You came into this house. You got close to him. You brought her here."

"I came because your agency hired me."

Victoria raised the stick again.

"Put it down."

Nathan Cole stood in the doorway.

Victoria froze. Grace's stomach dropped.

For three months, Grace had worked in his home under her middle name, keeping her head down and never staying in a room with him longer than necessary. Five years of changing jobs, apartments, phone numbers, and schools had taught her how to disappear.

Apparently not well enough.

Victoria dropped the stick. "Nathan, thank God. She attacked me."

Grace laughed once through the pain.

Nathan's gaze moved from Victoria to Grace, then to Lily trembling in her arms.

"What happened?"

"She was stealing. I confronted her."

"That's a lie," Grace said.

"Shut up," Victoria snapped.

Lily lifted her tear-streaked face.

"Daddy?"

The room died.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Grace closed her eyes.

Five years of hiding ended with one word.

Nathan stared at Lily. Gray-blue eyes. A dimple in her chin. Her thumb pressed hard into her palm--the exact nervous habit he had carried since childhood.

He looked at Grace.

"What did she call me?"

Grace said nothing.

"Grace."

Hearing her real name from him hurt more than the hockey stick.

"How old is she?"

"Four."

His face changed.

Five years earlier there had been one summer, one woman, and one goodbye he had never understood.

"You were pregnant?"

Grace swallowed.

"And you disappeared."

"No," she said. "I was made to disappear."

Victoria stepped forward. "Nathan, don't listen--"

He caught her wrist.

"Who did it?"

Grace met his eyes.

"Your father."

Nathan went still.

"And he wasn't alone."

Grace looked at Victoria.

"Her family helped him."

Sirens rose outside. Grace had called police before Victoria struck her.

Nathan dropped to one knee. Lily reached toward him.

"Daddy?"

This time his face broke.

Then Victoria leaned close to Grace and whispered:

"If the police run that child's name, you're going to lose both of them."
