Chapter 9 - The Shipping Terminal

At 7:58 p.m., Nathan entered the abandoned shipping terminal alone.

Martin stood beneath one hanging light.

No visible guards.

Nathan assumed at least four.

"Card," Martin said.

"My mother first."

"Still negotiating."

"Still breathing."

Nathan held up the plastic sleeve.

"You want this? Tell me why my father did it."

Martin smiled.

"Edward believed bloodlines mattered."

"He already had mine."

"He needed your marriage."

"To Victoria."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Martin's expression hardened.

"Because Cole Meridian was failing."

Nathan almost laughed. Today the company was worth billions.

Five years earlier, however, a disastrous expansion had buried it in debt.

The Vances had supplied rescue financing.

"In exchange for me," Nathan said.

"In exchange for continuity."

"And Grace?"

"A complication."

"Lily?"

"A larger one."

Nathan's hands curled into fists.

Martin extended his palm.

Nathan tossed him the fake card.

Martin inserted it into a laptop.

The tracker woke.

Elias's voice sounded in Nathan's earpiece.

"Signal live."

Martin opened the file.

Instead of Edward's voice, Nathan's prerecorded message played.

"Hi, Martin."

Martin looked up.

The terminal lights went black.

Police cut power and stormed the building.

A gunshot cracked. Nathan dropped behind a steel table.

"Police! Hands!"

Thirty seconds later, Martin was on the floor in handcuffs.

Eleanor was not there.

The cloned card gave them something else.

Before the takedown, Martin's laptop automatically connected to a remote server. Elias traced it to a Vance-owned storage facility outside Newark.

Police entered at 10:21.

No Eleanor.

But one room contained five years of surveillance photographs of Grace.

Work.

Daycare.

Grocery stores.

Apartments.

Every move tracked.

Ruiz pulled a file from a cabinet.

PATERNAL CONTINGENCY.

If child's paternity becomes public, initiate custodial instability narrative. Emphasize aliases, financial stress, concealment, and extortion risk.

Nathan felt sick.

This was not Victoria improvising.

It was a playbook.

Then Ruiz found a transfer log.

Eleanor Cole moved at 18:40.

Destination code: HN-4.

Grace stared.

"H.N."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"Hudson National."

The bank.

Eleanor had not been warning him away from the box.

She had been warning him about where Martin planned to take her.
