Chapter 15 - The Room Where Lily Was Born

The abandoned clinic stood outside Philadelphia, windows boarded and parking lot split by weeds.
Nathan wore a police wire.
Ruiz's team waited two blocks away.
Grace walked beside him.
Inside, one light burned at the end of the hall.
Charles Mercer waited in the delivery room where Lily had been born.
Patricia Hale stood beside him.
Grace's face hardened.
"You forged my daughter's records."
Patricia looked away.
"I followed instructions."
"You prepared to take my baby before she was born."
"No child was taken."
"Because I ran."
Charles raised a hand.
"Enough."
Nathan looked at him. "Where's the original file?"
Charles held up a folder.
"What do you want?"
"Immunity."
Nathan laughed once. "You helped threaten a pregnant woman, falsified court records, and concealed a child."
"I know."
"Then why should anyone protect you?"
"Because Martin Vance did not build this alone."
Charles handed the folder to Grace.
Inside were the original birth certificate, newborn footprints, hospital wristband record, and physician affidavit.
Enough to destroy the amendment.
Grace pressed the folder to her chest.
"Why now?"
"Because Martin is arrested, Victoria will sacrifice everyone, and the truth is bigger than your families."
Nathan narrowed his eyes.
"Who else?"
Charles looked at the hidden camera in Nathan's shirt.
"I know you're wired."
Patricia panicked.
Charles ignored her.
"Five members of the Cole Meridian board knew about the Vance fraud. Three approved surveillance. Two authorized payments to keep Grace away."
Nathan went cold.
"You're saying this was company policy?"
"I'm saying your father turned fear into governance."
A sharp crack shattered the room.
Charles jerked backward.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Grace screamed.
Nathan dragged her down as a second bullet struck the wall.
Police stormed the clinic.
Charles lay gasping.
Nathan crawled to him.
"The board," Charles whispered.
His hand opened.

A tiny USB drive rested in his palm.
Then his eyes closed.
