Chapter 18 - Edward's Last Truth

Edward Cole recorded the message six days before his death.
Nathan waited until morning to play it.
Grace sat beside him at the farmhouse kitchen table.
Lily was outside with Eleanor feeding carrots to a horse.
Nathan pressed play.
His father's voice filled the room.
Nathan, if you are hearing this, either Martin betrayed me or the Bennett matter returned.
Nathan almost stopped the recording.
Grace stayed beside him.
Edward continued.
I told myself everything I did was for the company. That is the lie men like me use when we are afraid to admit we did it for control.
Nathan looked down.
Grace Bennett was never a threat to you. She was a threat to the future I selected for you. When I learned she was pregnant, I chose the company over my son and pride over my granddaughter.
Grace's eyes filled.
I knew Lily was yours. I saw the test. I watched her grow through reports I had no right to order.
Nathan's jaw tightened.
There is no forgiveness large enough for that.
The recording crackled.
Martin created our financial crisis. I discovered it too late. By then I had committed crimes to hide the losses and allowed the Vances to use my fear against all of us.
A long pause.
If you ever find Grace, do not ask why she left.
Ask yourself why she had to survive us.
Nathan closed his eyes.
Edward's final words came quietly.
Break the machine, Nathan.
Don't inherit it.
The recording ended.
Grace sat in silence.
"He doesn't get redemption because he admitted it," she said.
"I know."
"But the truth matters."
"I know."
Nathan looked through the window at Lily laughing in the yard.
"What happens now?"
"Trials. Depositions. Years of cleanup."
"I meant us."
Grace turned toward him.
There were five stolen years between them.
Love could not erase them.
Money could not repay them.
Nathan did not ask for a second chance.
"I want to know Lily," he said. "At whatever pace is safe for her."
"And me?"
"I want to know you too."
"That's not the same as getting me back."
"I know."
Grace watched him carefully.
"Good."
Then Lily ran inside holding a carrot.
"Daddy, the horse stole two!"
May you like
Nathan smiled.
For now, that one word was enough.
