Chapter 3 - Five Years Earlier

Five years earlier, Nathan was twenty-nine and still believed money could fix almost anything.

Then he met Grace.

She was working a summer event at the Cole family lake house when a drunken board member grabbed a teenage server by the wrist.

Everyone looked away.

Grace didn't.

"Let her go."

The man laughed. "Who are you?"

"The person asking once."

She was fired before dessert.

Nathan found her walking down the private road carrying her shoes.

"You always get fired that dramatically?"

She kept walking. "Only from places that deserve it."

He followed in his car until she finally stopped.

"You're annoying."

"That's not a no."

That summer became the happiest part of his life.

Grace was studying nursing. Nathan was being groomed for a senior role at Cole Meridian. They ate diner food at two in the morning, swam during storms, fought about privilege, made up, and fell in love.

Then Nathan told his father.

Edward Cole listened without expression.

"A waitress?"

"She's not a waitress."

"You know what I mean."

Three days later, Nathan was sent to Singapore for an "emergency" acquisition.

Four days became three weeks.

Grace stopped answering on day six.

When Nathan returned, her apartment was empty. A letter waited beneath his windshield wiper.

What we had was fun. Don't look for me.

He never knew Grace had written none of it.

The real Grace sat in the back of Edward Cole's town car with two men from Vance Strategic Security beside her.

Edward placed a medical report on the seat.

Pregnant. Six weeks.

"Nathan deserves to know," Grace said.

"He deserves a future."

"So does his child."

Edward laid out photographs of Grace's mother, her younger brother, her apartment.

"We know where everyone you love lives."

Grace stared at him. "You're threatening my family."

"I'm offering a choice."

He slid her a bank draft.

She tore it in half.

Edward's eyes cooled.

"Then you'll leave tonight."

"You can't erase me forever."

"No," he said. "But I can make the world believe you're unstable, greedy, and dangerous."

The door locked beside her.

Grace finally understood that Cole money was not just wealth.

It was access.

Lawyers.

Judges.

Private investigators.

Ways to ruin a person without leaving fingerprints.

Edward leaned forward.

"If you ever tell Nathan about that baby, I will destroy everyone you love."

Grace's hand moved protectively over her stomach.

May you like

That night, she disappeared.

And Edward sent his son a goodbye she had never written.
