Chapter 13 - What Was in the Vial

Nathan's doctor reviewed blood work from the morning after Victoria entered his room.
"Your liver enzymes were elevated," he said. "A sedative could explain it."
Nathan felt cold.
Elias recovered cloud backups from the house network.
At 2:27 that morning, someone used Nathan's phone.
Three deleted messages had survived in backup logs:
Bring the documents tomorrow.
She suspects nothing.
Delete after reading.
Then Elias found a draft email from Victoria.
Subject: Bennett contingency.
If Grace does not leave voluntarily, trigger the child-welfare route. Use Nathan's credentials for camera blackout. Physical confrontation only if necessary.
Grace read the last sentence twice.
"Physical confrontation."
The hockey stick.
Planned.
Maya sent everything to prosecutors.
The next morning, the custody hearing still proceeded.
Victoria's lawyer painted Grace as unstable, secretive, poor, and obsessed with Nathan.
Then Maya stood.
"The petitioner's evidence is not unreliable. It is manufactured."
Dr. Halpern testified by video that he had never examined Grace.
Maya introduced the cloned badge data, Victoria's bedroom footage, the recovered email, and Grace's emergency-call recording.
Victoria's voice filled the courtroom:
You should have stayed away.
Impact.
Lily screaming.
No one moved.
Then Maya introduced Eleanor's photograph of the original DNA report.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.
The judge dismissed the emergency removal petition and ordered a criminal referral for falsified evidence and abuse of process.
Investigators approached Victoria.
For one second, Nathan believed the worst was over.
Victoria stood and looked at Grace.
"You think this saves you?"
Grace said nothing.
"My father built the case long before I touched that stick."
Nathan stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria smiled.
"There's a document you still haven't found."
"What document?"
"The one that says Lily isn't legally Grace's daughter."
Grace's face drained.
"That's impossible."
Victoria was escorted away.
May you like
But the smile never left her face.
And for the first time since the kitchen, Grace looked more frightened than angry.
