Chapter 17 - The Hearing

Six weeks later, Isabella entered family court wearing short sleeves.
Massimo noticed immediately.
So did Grant.
The bruises had faded.
The meaning had not.
Grant appeared in custody on charges related to kidnapping, assault, fraud, and evidence tampering. His criminal case would take months, but the family court could act now.
Evelyn sat behind his attorneys.
She looked smaller without control.
Rosa testified first.
Then Detective Torres.
Then the social worker from the supervised visit.
Video from the hidden camera played.
Grant’s voice filled the courtroom.
Wear the cream sweater. Your father notices everything.
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
Isabella testified for nearly two hours.
Grant’s lawyer asked why she stayed.
The question landed like an accusation.
Isabella paused.
“Because leaving an abusive person is not one decision,” she said. “It’s a hundred decisions made while someone is working every day to make you doubt your own judgment.”
The courtroom went silent.
“And because he convinced me that the people who loved me were more dangerous than he was.”
She looked at Massimo.
Her father did not look away.
The judge suspended Grant’s parental contact pending the criminal case and awarded Isabella sole temporary custody.
Evelyn received no independent visitation.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
Massimo stayed behind the security line.
Isabella came to him.
“You didn’t answer any of them.”
“They weren’t asking me anything that belonged to them.”
She almost smiled.
Then Torres approached.
“Carlo wants to deal.”
Massimo’s jaw tightened.
“He’ll testify against Grant and Evelyn?”
“And the board. But he wants to speak to you first.”
“No.”
Torres looked surprised.
Massimo continued, “If he has evidence, he gives it to you. He doesn’t get closure from me as payment.”
Isabella watched him.
Months earlier, Massimo would have needed the confrontation.
Now he did not.
As they walked toward the elevator, Noah ran from his aunt and grabbed Massimo’s hand.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes?”
“Is Dad going to jail?”
Massimo knelt.
“I don’t know what the judge will decide.”
“Are you going to make him?”
“No.”
Noah frowned.
“Then who?”
“The truth gets a turn now.”
May you like
Noah seemed to accept that.
Massimo wished adults did as easily.
