Chapter 2 - The Room Behind the Ballroom

The police arrived before the music downstairs stopped.
Massimo moved Isabella and Noah into a private office behind the ballroom. He left the door open, not because he trusted Grant, but because Detective Lena Torres told him to.
“No private family meetings,” she said. “Not tonight.”
Massimo nodded.
Grant sat in another room with an officer. Evelyn paced beside him, talking loudly about lawyers and reputations.
Isabella stared at the carpet.
Torres was in her forties, calm, patient, impossible to rush. She looked at the bruises without touching them.
“Did your husband do this?”
Isabella’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Noah climbed into her lap.
Massimo watched his daughter wrap both arms around the boy, then wince.
Torres noticed too.
“Is there another injury?”
“I’m fine.”
“Isabella.” Massimo’s voice cracked.
She flinched.
He immediately stepped back.
That tiny reaction hurt worse than any insult.
Massimo had spent years convincing himself that his daughter was safe because she lived in a guarded brownstone, had drivers, staff, money, and a husband who smiled beautifully in photographs.
He suddenly understood that safety and security were not the same thing.
A female paramedic entered.
Isabella finally agreed to be examined.
There were bruises along her ribs too.
Older ones.
Different colors.
Torres’s face hardened.
“Mrs. Mercer, I need you to tell me what happened.”
Isabella looked toward Massimo.
“Papa, can you take Noah outside?”
He wanted to refuse.
Instead, he obeyed.
In the hallway, Noah leaned against his leg.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes?”
“Are you mad at Mommy?”
Massimo crouched so quickly his knees protested.
“No. Never for this.”
Noah whispered, “Dad says she makes him mad.”
Massimo closed his eyes.
“Grown men are responsible for what they do with their anger.”
Noah studied him.
“Even you?”
The question landed where it was meant to.
“Especially me.”
A security officer approached.
“Mr. Bellandi, we checked the hall cameras.”
“And?”
“The footage from the corridor outside the family suite is gone.”
Massimo stood.
“How much?”
“Three hours.”
“Who deleted it?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Noah tugged Massimo’s sleeve.
“Grandpa.”
He bent down.
The boy whispered, “Mommy said the cameras at home disappear too.”
Massimo looked toward the room where Grant was being questioned.

This was not a man losing control once.
Someone had been building darkness around Isabella on purpose.
