Chapter 3 - The Marriage Everyone Envied

Four years earlier, Grant Mercer had looked like the safest man Isabella Bellandi could choose.

He was polished without being flashy, ambitious without seeming cruel, and brave enough to joke with Massimo at their first dinner.

“I know everyone expects me to be terrified of you,” Grant had said.

Massimo had smiled. “Are you?”

“Should I be?”

Isabella laughed.

Massimo liked him for making her laugh.

That simple fact bought Grant more trust than money ever could.

The wedding filled three society pages. Grant joined the legal division of Bellandi Freight Partners six months later. Noah was born the following spring.

For a while, Isabella seemed happy.

Then small things changed.

She stopped taking girls’ weekends.

She left family dinners early.

She stopped arguing with her father, which should have been the first warning. Isabella had argued with Massimo since she learned the word no.

When she became quiet, he told himself she was tired.

When she wore long sleeves in July, he accepted her explanation about air-conditioning.

When Grant began answering questions for her, Massimo called it marriage.

He saw every sign and translated each one into something harmless.

Because the alternative meant his daughter had been suffering ten minutes from his house while men who feared Massimo Bellandi held doors open for her husband.

At Bellandi Hall, Detective Torres returned from Isabella’s interview.

“She’s willing to make a statement.”

Massimo’s eyes closed briefly.

“Good.”

“She says the first physical incident happened eighteen months ago.”

Eighteen months.

Massimo’s stomach turned.

“What happened?”

“Argument over money. He grabbed her arm. Then apologized. After that, it escalated.”

Massimo stared through the glass wall at Grant.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Torres’s expression stayed neutral. “She says Grant told her exactly what you would do.”

“What did he say?”

“That you would hurt him, get arrested, bring federal attention back to the family, and Noah would lose both his father and grandfather.”

Massimo went still.

Grant had used Massimo’s history as a cage.

The past Massimo believed he had left behind had become the weapon that kept his daughter silent.

Torres continued. “There’s more. Mrs. Mercer says Grant controls most of the household accounts and monitors her phone.”

Massimo clenched his jaw.

A young officer entered holding a plastic evidence bag.

“This was found in Mr. Mercer’s coat.”

Inside was a second phone.

Torres turned it on.

The lock screen showed a photograph of Isabella leaving a medical clinic three weeks earlier.

Taken from across the street.

Massimo looked at Grant through the glass.

Grant had not merely been watching his wife.

He had been tracking her.
