Chapter 8 - The Blue Room

The “old house” was a Mercer property on Long Island that Grant had inherited from his grandfather.
Police obtained a warrant.
Massimo waited outside.
That mattered.
Every instinct told him to walk through the front door with Torres. But he had promised Isabella he would stop turning fear into permission.
So he stood behind the tape while investigators entered.
They found the blue room on the second floor.
The walls were literally painted navy.
Inside were copies of Isabella’s medical records, photographs taken without her knowledge, draft affidavits describing panic attacks she had never had, and a typed timeline of “incidents” designed to show mental decline.
There were also passports.
Grant’s.
Noah’s.
And one under a false name with Noah’s photograph.
Isabella’s knees weakened when Torres showed her.
“He was going to take him.”
Torres said nothing because there was nothing useful to say.
A locked cabinet held company files.
Transfer schedules.
Shell-company invoices.
Board voting projections.
And a document titled POST-MASSIMO CONTROL.
Massimo read the first line.
Upon M.B.’s death or incapacity...
He looked at Carlo’s name on the final page.
Carlo was not merely stealing.
He was planning for Massimo to be removed from the company entirely.
Then Isabella found a folder marked ELEANOR.
Her mother’s name.
Eleanor Bellandi had died twelve years earlier after a stroke.
Inside were private hospital records that Grant should never have possessed.
Massimo opened the first page.
A handwritten note was clipped to it.
Family vulnerability begins with health.
The handwriting was Carlo’s.
Massimo’s face went white.
Isabella saw it.
“Papa?”
He could not answer.
A second note listed dates from the months before Eleanor’s death.
Meetings.
Medication changes.
Doctor names.
Massimo turned to Torres.
“What is this?”
She read in silence.
Then she looked at him.
“I don’t know yet.”
Massimo stared at the page.
For the first time, the conspiracy around Isabella reached backward twelve years.

Back to his wife.
And suddenly Massimo no longer knew whether Eleanor’s death belonged only to the past.
