Chapter 18 - What Justice Looked Like

Justice did not arrive like a movie ending.
It arrived in motions, hearings, interviews, audits, and mornings when Isabella did not want to get out of bed.
Grant eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges after prosecutors tied him to the kidnapping plan, forged documents, and financial fraud.
Evelyn pleaded to conspiracy and evidence tampering.
Carlo agreed to cooperate and admitted he had recruited Grant through business contacts, hoping marriage would eventually give him influence over Isabella’s voting shares.
He had not ordered every act of violence.
That distinction mattered legally.
It mattered less to Isabella.
“You built the cage,” she said in her victim statement. “You don’t get to act surprised by what happened inside it.”
Massimo sat behind her.
He did not speak for her.
That was part of his penance too.
Federal investigators also examined Massimo’s past.
He resigned as chairman of Bellandi Freight.
Several contracts were suspended.
The company entered a monitored compliance agreement.
Financial television called it the fall of a dynasty.
Massimo watched the headline once, then turned it off.
At home, Noah was building a cardboard fort in the living room.
“Grandpa, we need tape.”
Massimo handed him the roll.
His empire had gotten much smaller.
He was surprised by how much easier it was to breathe.
Later, Isabella found him on the back patio.
“You know I blamed you,” she said.
“I know.”
“I still do, sometimes.”
“I know that too.”
“You weren’t the one who hit me.”
“No.”
“But you made violence feel like the family language.”
Massimo looked down.
“Yes.”
She waited for an excuse.
He offered none.
“I’m trying to learn another one.”
Isabella sat beside him.
“What language?”
“Listening.”
She laughed softly.
“You’re terrible at it.”
“I’ve had sixty-eight years of bad practice.”
For the first time in months, she leaned her shoulder against his.
Inside, Noah shouted because his cardboard roof collapsed.
Massimo started to stand.
Isabella caught his sleeve.
“Let him try first.”
They watched through the glass.
Noah stared at the fallen roof, frowned, then picked up the tape.
He fixed it himself.
May you like
Massimo smiled.
Not every problem needed the biggest man in the room.
