Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the File

Massimo did not sleep that night.
He sat at his kitchen table with Eleanor’s old hospital file and refused every drink Dante offered him.
“Coffee,” Massimo said.
Dante frowned. “Since when?”
“Since I started making decisions I want to remember.”
The medical records showed Eleanor’s stroke had been considered natural. She had high blood pressure. There had been no reason to suspect anything else.
The suspicious notes in the blue room did not prove murder.
They proved someone had studied the family’s weak points.
Torres warned Massimo not to invent a crime because grief wanted one.
He listened.
That was new too.
A forensic accountant found a simpler explanation.
Carlo had begun collecting private information on Bellandi family members years earlier to build leverage.
Eleanor’s illness gave him insight into succession planning.
After her death, he knew exactly which shares passed to Isabella.
Grant entered Isabella’s life eighteen months later.
Massimo stared at the timeline.
“You think Carlo introduced them?”
The accountant nodded. “Grant’s firm sponsored the charity gala where they met.”
Massimo remembered Carlo insisting Isabella attend.
His oldest friend had not merely betrayed him.
He may have selected the man who would marry his daughter.
At noon, Torres brought another development.
Grant’s second phone contained dozens of deleted location records.
One location repeated.
The River Crown warehouse.
An old Bellandi property near the East River, mostly unused since the company modernized its distribution network.
Noah had heard adults mention it.
Rosa had too.
“What’s there?” Isabella asked.
Massimo answered immediately.
“Nothing that should matter.”
That was exactly why it mattered.
Police searched the warehouse.
At first they found dust, broken pallets, and abandoned office furniture.
Then a dog alerted near a false wall.
Behind it was a small furnished room.
A bed.
Bottled water.
Children’s snacks.
A locked cabinet of cash.
Isabella stared at the photos from the search.
Grant had prepared a place to hide with Noah.
Or hide Noah from her.
Torres opened the cabinet inventory.
“There was also this.”
One envelope.
Inside was a signed statement supposedly written by Isabella.
It claimed she feared her father, suffered from delusions, and wanted Grant to take Noah away if anything happened.
Her signature looked perfect.
Isabella whispered, “I never wrote that.”
Massimo looked at the date.
May you like
It was signed three months earlier.
The same night Isabella had awakened after tea at Evelyn’s house with no memory of getting home.
