Chapter 11 - The Vote

The boardroom smelled of coffee and expensive leather. Elena sat at the head of the table as though she owned every chair.
"Adrian's recent behavior has endangered the company," she began.
"By requesting records?" he asked.
"By allowing domestic matters to distract him."
A director shifted uncomfortably. Adrian put the photograph of Sofia holding June in the kitchen on the screen. He had taken it after the confrontation, showing the dirty plates and the birthday cake with its candles melted down.
"This is what she calls a domestic matter," he said. "My wife was accused without evidence, and private images of our infant were leaked to the press."
Elena's expression hardened. "You brought gossip into a business meeting?"
"No. I brought evidence of a campaign designed to make my wife look unreliable before a property transaction."
He introduced the trust records and requested an independent audit. Two directors supported him. Four opposed him. The rest abstained.
The motion to suspend him passed by one vote.
Adrian removed his company access badge and set it on the table. "You can take the title. You can't make the records disappear."
As he left, an assistant hurried to Sofia, who was waiting outside with Lena. "Mrs. Whitmore? A courier left this for you."
Inside the envelope was an unsigned page of Mateo's original partnership contract. The bottom section had been torn away. Someone had written one sentence on the back:
After the vote Adrian walked down the executive corridor and passed the framed photographs of company founders. Mateo was not among them. Neither were the dockworkers who had built the harbor. Adrian asked the building manager to preserve the entire display as it stood. When the manager looked puzzled, he said, 'Someday someone may want to know exactly whose faces we decided were worth hanging.' He carried one cardboard box out to his car: two notebooks, a picture of June, and the birthday candle he had found in the cake's empty box. He could not remember why he had kept it.
