Chapter 16 - What the Doctor Remembered

Dr. Price met the investigators with his lawyer and denied wrongdoing. He said Mateo had arrived confused, injured, and unresponsive after collapsing near the harbor. He had never suspected a crime.

A nurse's old shift notes told a different story. They described a man asking repeatedly for someone to call his wife and saying, "The car wasn't an accident."

The nurse, retired now, remembered being told to replace the note with a shorter summary. She had kept a duplicate because the request bothered her.

Sofia listened as Lena explained the limits of the evidence. "There may have been negligence, obstruction, or worse. We can't say which until investigators finish."

"My mother spent twenty years thinking his heart just stopped."

"You can tell her what we know. Don't give her certainty the records haven't earned."

Sofia drove to Isabel's house. They sat together at the kitchen table, June asleep between them in a portable crib. Isabel read the nurse's note and began to sob.

"He asked for me," she said. "He thought I was coming."

Sofia held her until the crying slowed.

Later, Adrian called. A board director had agreed to testify that Elena concealed environmental reports before the planned sale. Another director was considering cooperating.

"Something's changing," Adrian said.

"Yes," Sofia replied. "But I need you to understand. Even if we win, I don't become the woman who walked into your house before all this."

"I know."

Isabel told Sofia about the last ordinary morning she had shared with Mateo. He burned toast, tried to scrape it clean, and insisted the black part was only extra flavor. Sofia had been sixteen and furious because he wouldn't sign the permission slip for a school trip until he'd read the details. 'I used to think that was what we'd remember,' Isabel said. 'A man who took too long with everything.' Sofia took her mother's hand. 'Maybe we can remember that too.' They stayed at the table until June woke, and for once no one rushed to turn their grief into evidence.

Before they hung up, he added, "The company sent me one final notice. They're suing you personally for interfering with the sale."
