Chapter 4 - Unit Nineteen

Sofia didn't go alone. She brought Lena, who drove them to a self-storage facility outside the city while Adrian stayed home with June and a pediatric nurse.

"If this is a setup, we leave," Lena said.

Unit 19 smelled of dust and old cardboard. Inside stood a metal toolbox, a wrapped canvas painting, and a milk crate full of receipts from Whitmore Harbor's expansion twenty years earlier.

The toolbox contained a battered audio recorder. Sofia pressed play.

Her father's voice filled the unit, scratchy but unmistakable. "October eleven. They swapped the safety reports again. If someone gets hurt, they won't be able to say they didn't know."

There were more recordings. An argument with Victor Hale. A woman's voice ordering Mateo to accept a payment and forget what he had seen.

Elena's voice.

Sofia bent forward, trying to breathe. Lena stopped the tape.

"We need copies and a chain of custody," she said. "Not revenge in a parking lot."

Tucked beneath the recorder was a photograph of Mateo standing beside a younger Adrian, both covered in soot. On the back her father had written, The boy did nothing wrong.

As they carried the crate toward Lena's car, a gray sedan rolled slowly past. Sofia recognized the driver from Elena's annual charity gala: Victor Hale.

He lowered his window. "Mrs. Whitmore, your mother-in-law asked me to collect some family property."

Lena held up her phone. "Then she can make that request through counsel."

Victor smiled without warmth. "That's unfortunate. The landlord reported a break-in here ten minutes ago."

Lena photographed each box before touching the contents. The canvas painting turned out to be one of Sofia's childhood watercolors, a crooked yellow house with three blue windows. On the back Mateo had written, 'She says one window is for Grandma.' Sofia laughed once, unexpectedly, and the sound broke into a sob. Her father had saved a child's painting in a storage unit full of dangerous evidence. Lena gave her a moment, then asked whether she wanted to keep it separate from the legal records. Sofia said yes. Some things belonged to the investigation. That one belonged to her.
