Chapter 13 - The Letter

Sofia confronted Elena in the mansion's conservatory, with Lena present and a recorder openly placed on the table. Adrian stood by the doorway.

"I know about the letter," Sofia said. "The one my father wrote to me."

Elena looked out at the garden. "Your father was a complicated man."

"He was a mechanic who went to work and came home with grease on his hands. You don't get to describe him to me."

"He made demands."

"He wanted the safety reports corrected."

Elena turned. "He threatened to expose the entire company. Hundreds of workers could have lost their jobs."

"They could have lost their lives."

For the first time, Elena's composure slipped. "You think I wanted anyone hurt?"

Adrian stepped forward. "You knew Sofia's name before I met her. Did you arrange that charity job where we first spoke?"

Elena didn't answer.

"Mom. Did you?"

"I wanted to keep her close," she said at last. "It was supposed to be a simple arrangement. She would marry well. You would be happy. The past would stay buried."

Sofia felt physically sick. Her love story had begun under surveillance.

"Where is my letter?"

Elena opened a cabinet and removed a thin yellow envelope. "He believed you deserved the truth. I believed you deserved a life without it."

Before opening the envelope, Sofia asked why Elena had kept it. Elena admitted she had read it so many times that she could quote parts. 'Sometimes I wanted to burn it,' she said. 'Sometimes I thought I should mail it.' Sofia almost asked whether guilt had ever kept Elena awake. Then she remembered June crying beside the dirty dishes and decided the answer would not help. 'You had twenty years to make a different choice,' she said. 'You used every one of them to make sure I never had one.' Adrian looked away, as if the sentence had landed on him too.

Sofia broke the seal. The first sentence read: Sofia, if you are reading this, someone decided my silence was worth more than my life.
