Chapter 19 - The Debt That Wasn't Hers

Sofia had earned her scholarship through grades, essays, and a grueling interview. She had always treated the award as proof that she could build something beyond the life her mother had struggled to provide.
Now she learned Elena's trust had secretly supplied part of the funding.
"Was any of it real?" she asked Claire.
"Your work was real. The selection panel was independent, according to the records we have. The trust donated to the fund without naming you as a beneficiary."
"So she bought a place in my life before Adrian ever met me."
"She may have been trying to buy quiet. But she didn't write your papers or pass your exams."
Sofia visited the museum where she had once worked. Her former supervisor, Margaret Ellis, hugged her and offered a part-time curatorial role once she was ready. "Your eye for history was always yours," Margaret said. "Don't let them steal that too."
That evening Adrian invited Sofia to meet at a small public garden, with Isabel watching June nearby. He admitted he had been tempted to keep the scholarship information from Sofia to spare her more pain.
"That's exactly what your mother would have said," Sofia replied.
"I know. That's why I told you."
She studied him. He had spent months choosing honesty when it cost him something. But rebuilding trust wasn't a reward he could demand.
"I still love you," Sofia said. "I'm also still angry. Both things can be true."
"I'll keep showing up for the hard part."
After visiting the museum, Sofia sat in a quiet gallery before a small painting of a kitchen table. The scene had no people in it: just a bowl, a striped cloth, and a chair pulled away. Once she would have criticized its simplicity. Now she found herself studying the empty chair, wondering who had left and whether they planned to return. Margaret sat beside her and said nothing. Sofia realized how rare that had become. She had spent months surrounded by people asking what she would do next. For ten peaceful minutes, nobody wanted an answer.

As they walked back to June, Lena called. The court had scheduled the hearing on Sofia's ownership claim. Rosa was ready to testify. Elena, unexpectedly, had asked to take the stand too.
