Chapter 7 - Under the Waterline

The harbor maps showed North Pier 4 had been renamed and incorporated into a private warehouse complex. A satellite photograph revealed the old pilings beneath the newer dock.

Adrian used his position on the company board to request an inspection. Victor refused, citing a pending sale. An hour later, Elena called.

"You promised to keep this inside the family," she said.

"You accused my wife of theft in front of my daughter. You made it public."

"I raised you better than this."

"You raised me to be afraid of disappointing you. That's different."

They went to the harbor with a licensed structural engineer, Naomi Brooks, and an independent security officer. Sofia stayed with June at Lena's apartment, watching Naomi's live feed.

Behind a bolted storage door, the team found pallets of archived shipping records, still sealed with Whitmore labels. Several described hazardous materials moving through a residential waterfront zone without required disclosures.

Then Naomi spotted a newly installed camera aimed at the door. "Somebody knew we'd come."

The feed cut out.

Adrian called Sofia from the parking lot three minutes later. "We're fine. Someone remotely disabled the network. Naomi has photographs."

"Come home."

"I will. One more thing: I found a payment ledger. Your father's name is in it."

"As a recipient?"

"As an owner. He held twenty percent of the harbor property through a trust."

Naomi's engineer notes showed fresh bolts on a structure the company claimed no longer existed. The old foundation was not abandoned; it had been reinforced and hidden inside the new warehouse. Adrian asked the site supervisor who authorized the work. The man gave him a work-order number but wouldn't meet his eyes. Later Naomi said she had seen that behavior before: workers caught between earning a paycheck and acknowledging an obvious hazard. Adrian insisted no employee be photographed without consent. Whatever had happened at the pier, he was not going to make the people on the floor pay for it again.

Sofia stared at the screen. Her mother had worked double shifts to keep the lights on. They had never received a cent.
