Chapter 6 - Seventeen

Sofia showed Lena the statement before she showed Adrian. Lena studied the page.
"Was he a minor?"
"Seventeen."
"And injured. That matters. But we need to know whether he remembers signing it."
Adrian arrived at Lena's office with a folder of his own. The document didn't surprise him.
"I signed something in the hospital," he said. "Mom said it was insurance paperwork. I couldn't read clearly because of the medication."
"You were old enough to remember the words 'Mateo Reyes'," Sofia said.
"I never saw those words."
She wanted to believe him. She also remembered every time he had called his mother difficult but harmless.
Adrian laid a photocopy of his hospital chart on the table. It documented heavy sedation during the period the signature was dated. Then he unfolded a page he had found in his father's old files.
"Dad tried to reopen the investigation six months later. He was removed as chairman before the review happened."
"Your mother removed him?"
"The board voted. Victor organized it. Dad died two years later."
Lena set down the chart. "If the statement was obtained under sedation, it may be unreliable. But the larger issue is why anyone needed a false culprit."
Sofia looked at her father's recorded notes. He had mentioned compromised bolts, missing inspections, and a shipping manifest marked North Pier 4.
Adrian frowned. "There hasn't been a North Pier 4 in twenty years."
"Where did it go?"
"They demolished it after the accident."
Adrian described waking in the hospital to his mother's perfume and a clipboard resting against his knees. He remembered asking for the man who had rescued him. She said the mechanic was gone and that everything had been taken care of. 'I wanted to see him,' Adrian said. 'She told me it would upset the insurance people.' Sofia pictured a frightened teenager bandaged from shoulder to hip, grateful to be alive and too medicated to argue. She could pity that boy. She wasn't yet sure what she could forgive the adult who had trusted the same explanation for another seventeen years.

Lena turned the recording over. Taped to its back was a small label: Pier 4 was never demolished.
